Are Black Friday sales living proof the world’s gone mad?

Why people queue up for hours, trample & wrestle each other recreating a wildlife scene from BBC’s Planet Earth, all for the sake of a desperate attempt to grab a cheap telly baffles me.

Even online shoppers resisted the temptation of the duvet to nab a night owl bargain, last year Argos’ biggest trading hour on Black Friday was midnight – 1am, receiving 15 orders per second.

At Robinson Reade we enjoy a bit of retail therapy like most girls, but when it comes to Black Friday we say thanks, but no thanks.

It’s not just retail traders who believe that slashing prices is a good way to get business, I’ve seen estate agencies do it too. They offer fees so low it leaves me thinking ‘how can they charge that and still give a good level of service and expertise?’

The honest answer is they can’t and a ‘Black Friday’ approach to estate agency just doesn’t work.

And here’s why.

Over the 23 years I’ve been an estate agent I’ve looked on in horror as agencies try this cheap and cheerful route but become unstuck time and time again. It’s an unsustainable business model and ultimately the client suffers.

Ridiculously low fees mean something has to give and it’s usually the level of client care and knowledge. The old adage – you get what you pay for is particularly true in the world of property.

Don’t get me wrong, I love nothing more than trawling through the rails for a bargain (TKMaxx is a particular favourite) but some cost corners are just not worth cutting.

And something that could save a few bob at first often turns out more expensive in the long run.

I set up my own agency to focus on customer service believing that if you’re going to do a job you should do it right. If you work with knowledgeable people that go the extra mile for you paying a little extra to save your sanity is a no brainer in my book, and I’ve got the experience to show for it.

Thanks for reading and if you have any property related questions please don’t hesitate to get in touch with us – we’d love to help you.
