The village of Park Gate grew up around the Swanwick railway station, built in 1889 specifically for the Strawberry Industry, it was the main gathering point for the local growers sending their fruit off to the markets in London.

Whilst rail distribution ceased in 1966 the train station still offers regular rail links to London via Southampton, Fareham and Portsmouth making the location popular with commuters, it is also just moments from Junction 9 of the M27.

The shopping area along the A27 and Middle Road hosts a number of estate agents, catholic church, several shops and hairdressers, a craft bar and cafes. The Talisman pub on Bridge Road was named after a popular strawberry variety.
